NPI Registry Lookup
Updated Jun 01, 2026 - The NPI Registry is a database of health care providers registered with the National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). Every registered provider in the NPI Registry has been issued a unique NPI Number which allows them to properly submit claims to Medicare or other health plans. HIPAA requires all covered entities to share their NPI number with other providers, health plans, clearinghouses for any administrative or financial purpose.
NPI Lookup
Search the NPI Registry for any registered provider from the NPPES. Lookup the NPI number of any health care provider.
Health Care Providers
Covered health care providers, health plans & health care clearinghouses must use the NPI number for all HIPAA covered transactions.
Taxonomy Codes
The Health Care Provider Taxonomy code set is an external, non-medical data code set designed for use in an electronic environment.
Are You A Covered Entity?
Did you know that all HIPAA covered entities must comply with standards for electronic transactions, not just for privacy & security?
Under HIPAA, you are a covered health care provider if you electronically transmit health information in connection with a HIPAA standard transaction, even if you use a business to do so. The CMS offers a tool to help health care providers and organizations check whether or not they are considered a HIPAA covered entity. See the CMS Administrative Simplification website to learn about the standards and operating rules that are required for electronic health care transactions conducted by HIPAA covered entities.
